The Coxsackie Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has chosen the 2008 Prism Award winners and will honor them at the 7th Annual Come Grow With Us Gala on Friday, June 6th.
Aaron Flach of Flach Real Estate has been named Business Person of the Year. Mr. Flach has restored many old or crumbling buildings back to vibrant and useful landmarks, always respectful of the history of the properties. The Eagle Hotel at the bottom of Mansion Street has been converted to business offices and private residences but the exterior—and interior--remains the beautiful reminder of a time gone by when ice harvesting was in full-swing and a flourishing river economy made the Lower Landing bustle. Many people in the community may remember walking the halls of the old Coxsackie School located at the top of Mansion Street hill. Today it serves as private residences. Much of the detail, including brick walls, large windows and elaborate wood molding, still remains thanks to the vision and hard work of Mr. Flach. He has also filled a need for affordable housing with attractive apartments near the end of Sunset Boulevard and there are plans in the works for Senior Housing off of Route 81. Sensitivity to the appearance of his projects and his respect for historic properties, combined with his generous support of and investment in the community are what makes Aaron Flach the Chamber’s 2008 Business Person of the Year.
The Community Service Prism Award will be presented to Dick Golden of Athens. The U.S. Army Veteran is active in the Coxsackie-Athens Rotary, a not-for-profit organization committed to helping others. He serves as chairman of Handy Neighbors and delivers Meals on Wheels, as well as lending a hand at the Coxsackie and Athens Food Pantries. In his spare time, Mr. Golden volunteers at Coxsackie-Athens High School track meets and serves on the Athens Community Foundation Advisory Board (New Athens Gen). He is also a member of the Greene County YMCA board of directors, putting his contagious energy to use for fundraising. He lives in Sleepy Hollow with his wife of 50 years, Helen. We are lucky indeed to have such a warm-hearted, community-minded citizen in our midst!
The third award to be presented that night will be the President’s Award. Peggy Quigley, co-owner of Century 21/Heart Land Realty, was chosen by Chamber president Doug Calkins to receive this award because of her unending support of the organizations and businesses in the community. She has expanded the touching hand of charity. Mrs. Quigley has unselfishly given time and leadership to help people, and willed organizations and its membership to do more.
